え？先生、前回、「倫理とは道徳のことである」と言ってませんでした！？ Huh? Professor, didn’t you say last time that ethics and morals are the same thing!?

そうですね。基本的に違いで使い分けることはないのですが、細かく見れば実は違うんですよ。That’s true; in practice they’re usually used interchangeably, but if you look closely, there are subtle differences.

どちらも「人がふみ行うべき行為の規範」であり、辞書としては同義語・類語として扱われます。それでは、「倫理」と「道徳」の違いはどこにあるのでしょうか。まずは、細かく意味を確認していきましょう。Both refer to standards of conduct that people should follow and are treated as synonyms in dictionaries, but where exactly does the difference between “ethics” and “morals” lie? Let’s first take a closer look at their meanings.

「倫理」の意味・英語・例文

• 人間生活の秩序の中で行うべき規範の筋道。“Ethics” refers to the principles or rationale that guide proper behavior within the order of human life.
• 特定の集団や職業における善悪の判断基準を指す。It indicates standards for judging right and wrong within a specific group or profession.
• 客観的に正しいと思われる規範。It is considered an objectively appropriate set of norms
• 言い換え・類語：道徳、モラル、人道、義理、道理、良心、仁義など

「道徳」の意味・英語・例文

• 社会秩序を守るための善悪を決める規範。“Morals” refer to norms that define right and wrong in order to maintain social order.

倫理と道徳について、意味とどんな状況で使うかを解説してきました。それでは、次の２つの文章には、どのような違いがあるでしょうか。We have explained the meanings of ethics and morals and the situations in which they are used; so what is the difference between the following two sentences?

①は、特定集団内での発言であり、その違反行為は、客観的に見ても正されるべきことです。②は、その違反行為は、個人的に「良くないこと」と咎められているわけです。① “From an ethical standpoint, it should not be done.” ②“From a moral standpoint, it should not be done.” Sentence① is a statement made within a specific group, and the violation is something that should be corrected from an objective perspective, whereas in sentence② the act is criticized as “wrong” based on a personal moral judgment.

どちらも、もし言われたら「ドキッ」っとするでしょうが、この場合、①の方が処罰がある分重い表現と言えるでしょう。①「職業倫理」「政治倫理」というと、客観性のある事項であり罪に問われる可能性があります。逆に②「社会道徳」に反していても、法律的な罰則や圧力はなく個人の裁量が問題になります。①They were dismissed after their professional ethics were called into question. ②Your way of thinking goes against social morals.” Both would make anyone flinch if said to them, but in this case the first is heavier because it involves actual punishment; terms like “professional ethics” or “political ethics” imply objective standards and may lead to legal or formal accountability, whereas even if something violates “social morals,” it generally carries no legal penalties and is left to individual judgment.

「倫理」と「道徳」の違いは関係ない？

ここまで、違いを見てきましたが、倫理も道徳も同義語として使われます。その理由は、「特定の集団」と「社会」に違いがないためでしょう。日本の社会というものは、日本に住み、日本の文化と社会性を踏襲した人々の集団です。また、個人の善悪の基準も、概ね法や社会的なルールによって決められます。So far we’ve examined the differences, but ethics and morals are often used as synonyms, largely because the line between a “specific group” and “society” is blurred: Japanese society itself is a group of people living in Japan and sharing its culture and social norms, and individual standards of right and wrong are mostly shaped by laws and social rules.

それゆえ、「犯罪」「人を貶める行為」「ウソ」などを指してなら「倫理的」にも「道徳的」にもNGといえます。けれど、例えば「連絡なしの5分の遅刻」「ベビーカーを電車の中で畳まない」「壁のない喫煙所での喫煙」などは、個人の判断や所属するグループにより善し悪しが変わってくるでしょう。 That’s why acts like crime, harming others, or lying can be called unacceptable both ethically and morally. However, things like being five minutes late without notice, not folding a stroller on a train, or smoking in an unenclosed smoking area may be judged differently depending on the individual or the group they belong to.

新常識や忖度の多い日本では、倫理なのか道徳なのかあいまいな例が多いですね。In Japan, where new social norms and unspoken expectations are common, many cases fall into a gray area between ethics and morals.

倫理的と道徳的・倫理観と道徳観・倫理学と道徳哲学の違い

さて、これまで「倫理」と「道徳」について、違いや意味の関係性を見てきました。それでは、倫理的と道徳的、倫理観と道徳観（道徳心）、倫理学と道徳哲学の違いはどのようなものなのでしょうか。We have so far examined the differences and relationships between ethics and morals, so now let’s look at how terms such as ethical vs. moral, ethical views vs. moral views (or moral sense), and ethics vs. moral philosophy differ.

倫理的と道徳的の違い

「倫理的」と「道徳的」は、それぞれ「倫理」と「道徳」の形容詞（形容動詞）の形です。“Ethical” and “moral” are the adjectival forms of “ethics” and “morals” respectively. 

倫理観と道徳観の違い

「倫理観」と「道徳観（道徳心）」は、感覚や見方を表しています。“Ethical views” and “moral views (moral sense)” both refer to one’s perceptions and perspectives.

倫理学＝道徳哲学

「倫理学」と「道徳哲学」は、同義語であり、哲学の分野です。“Ethics” and “moral philosophy” are synonymous and belong to the field of philosophy. 

倫理学の目的は、人がどのように行動すべきか、善悪とは何かを知ること。研究対象は、道徳的な規範や価値観、社会のルール、人と人との関わり方などです。

倫理と倫理学（道徳哲学）の違いは、学問かどうかだけではありません。倫理学は、倫理に叶うかどうか考えること。倫理は、その考える材料です。
